About Traineeships
Although the course is designed to be finished in 12 months, training contracts vary and some states allow up to two years for completion. The NIBA College course is delivered by distance learning with the trainee’s progress monitored regularly by the Student Liaison Assistant. Trainees are provided with an training plan, notifying them of when assessments are due. In some states, NIBA College assessors undertake workplace visits during the year.
Those trainees who feel they already have some of the skills covered based on past work experience or qualifications can apply for module exemptions. Graduates from the program are eligible to enter into the appropriate Diploma of Financial Services course for further study.
With talk in the media of skills shortages it is good to see the number of brokerages and insurance offices interested in taking on trainees. If your business decides to employ representatives under a traineeship scheme, it is important that all concerned realise it is a job that combines both work and structured training.
NIBA College offers “on-the-job” traineeships, the most relevant format for most intermediary businesses. Under this format, instruction and assessment take place in the office environment. While there is structured coursework delivered via distance education, there is no classroom based training. The training contract with the government requires that the licensee provide active training supervision and time for the trainee to complete hours of formal study and insurance skills practice in the workplace.
